The hospital was built in 1874 and now has 15 beds and a large number of outpatient clinics run by Salisbury Foundation Hospital. These include Minor Injuries, X-ray & Physiotherapy departments. The NHS Dorset CCG Governing Body has approved the recommendation:
to maintain a community hub with beds in Shaftesbury Hospital whilst working with the local community until a sustainable model for future services based on the health and care needs of this locality is established, possibly at a different site to the existing hospital.
